A resource center for the development of storytelling in the Nordic arena

- Every person's story is worth listening to!

The Nordic Storytelling Center (NBC) operates in the Nordic arena, but also with contacts in the rest of the storytelling world. The main areas of activity are storytelling as a performing art and as an educational method. NBC also works with networking and cross-border cooperation in areas such as social engagement and cultural heritage.

The single largest activity for NBC is the annual Storytelling Festival in Skellefteå, which is organized in collaboration with a number of local actors with events throughout Skellefteå municipality. The festival week usually generates over 8000 visits to 130-160 program items.

Other recurring activities are the Storytelling Municipality of the Year, Storytelling Power, workshops and courses, Learning with Storytelling (further training in storytelling as a pedagogical method) and practical pedagogical work, especially in schools.

In collaboration with Umeå University, the Nordic Storytelling Center is engaged in research on storytelling from an interdisciplinary perspective and is involved in a training in oral storytelling for social and cultural sustainability.

At the Nordic/Baltic level, NBC is working to develop the Nordic Baltic Storytelling Meeting network, where collaborations are sought in areas such as further education and festival cooperation.

At European level in FEST (Federation for European Storytelling), NBC is represented on the board.

The organization
Skellefteå municipality commissioned Västerbottensteatern to establish the Nordic Storytelling Center as a department at the theater in 2018. The organization also has project support from Region Västerbotten.
