Malå is Storytelling Municipality of the Year 2023/24

MALÅ IS STORY MUNICIPALITY OF THE YEAR 2023/24

On 5 August, Malå - Storytelling Municipality of the Year 2023-2024 was inaugurated. Malå is the twelfth municipality in the order and the program for the inauguration day included - in addition to an official inauguration - a tasty and varied program on the agenda. "It was a wonderful day where we finally got to kick off our storytelling year for real!" says Maria Larsson, Head of Culture in Malå Municipality.

Wide range of services for different target groups
Maria Larsson
, who together with the local working group planned the inauguration, is looking forward to an eventful year.
- "Malå already has a strong storytelling tradition and everyone is so excited about our storytelling year," says Maria Larsson. "There will be a wide range of initiatives aimed at different target groups, and it is important to focus on our children and young people, so schools will be a priority area. The initiatives will be felt in the municipality as a whole. For example, "Today's poem" will be performed by the poetry group Kalejdoskop at Hotel Tjamstan, and storytelling cafés and workshops are being planned in full swing. The program will be updated continuously throughout the year at www.mala.se, so I encourage everyone to look there so you don't miss out on all the fun," concludes Maria.

Great commitment and wonderful collaborations
The Storytelling Municipality of the Year is organized annually by the Nordic Storytelling Centre in collaboration with Västerbotten Museum and the municipality in question. Theresa Eriksson, Nordic Storytelling Center, is excited about the upcoming storytelling year in Malå.
- "We are so impressed by the commitment that exists in Malå. There are lots of exciting ideas and plans for events. The commitment is great in the working group and several activities, such as Storytelling Cafés, have already started before we even had our kickoff - it feels very promising!

Co-chair training
One of the first activities of the year will be a wordsmith training. Under the guidance of Marianne Folkedotter, storytelling antiquarian at Västerbotten Museum, those interested will - as early as 10 August - learn how to organize and lead a storytelling café. After that, the year will be filled with local storytelling activities with support from the Nordic Storytelling Center and Västerbotten Museum.
