Dark noon

Part of REACT – The Swedish National Theater's international festival 2026

DARK NOONis a wild and merciless reckoning with the Wild West, and with Western civilization's self-image. Seven South African actors create their own western, complete with cowboys and Native Americans, gold miners, missionaries, and deadly gunfights, in a village built of red clay with a saloon, gold mine, railroad, and church.

Director Tue Biering, choreographer Nhlanhla Mahlangu, and the actors transport the audience to a time when 35 million hungry and impoverished Europeans crossed the Atlantic in search of a second chance. They headed west to seek gold and pursue the American dream, but at a terrible cost.

In "God's Own Country," neither black nor white lives were worth anything in the name of happiness. Here, violence, prairie idyll, prostitutes, pickpockets, and everything else the Wild West has to offer come together. The result is an untamed and lawless tale of the emergence of the Western world, told by South African actors who turn the relationship between the West and Africa inside out.

DARK NOON is a performance where anything can happen, and where the audience would be wise to expect the unexpected.

DARK NOONwas created and produced by the theater company fix+foxy and is a co-production with Revolver/Østerbro Teater, supported by The Danish Arts Council, Bikuben Foundation, and Beckett Foundation.
