Meramieh

The Palestinian theater Al-Harah comes to Västerbottensteatern with a historical performance.

The performance "Meramieh" is based on interviews collected for the book "Living Memories", published in 2017 in collaboration between Al-Rowat for Studies & Research and The Danish House in Palestine.

In the book, six people tell their story of what is known in the Middle East as the Nakba, or Palestinian catastrophe, in 1948, when over half a million Palestinians were driven from their homeland.

In the show, an old man and an old woman look back on their lives. Lives that were changed forever in 1948. They dream and long to return to the country they were expelled from as children while they wait. Sometimes hopeful, other times giving up.

Longing burns in both of them, as the sage burns on their fire, sending their thoughts and memories back to their inaccessible homeland. 'Meramieh' means sage and is seen as a healing herb in Palestine - but are there wounds so deep they never heal?

The show is written and directed by Mirna Sakhleh and features actors Rula Nassar and Nicola Zreineh.

The performance is in Arabic with Swedish text on screen.
