In our version, Romeo and Juliet are two grown-up, equal people who meet and fall madly in love. The language and relationships are respectfully updated and deepened, but we all recognize the powerful message of the original story - love knows no bounds.

Just like Shakespeare, we play with rhyme, rhythm and form, but we also throw in lots of newly written songs and music - it will be musical theater from start to finish. All performed by a hand-picked, beautiful singing and dancing ensemble. Even though we are in 17th century Verona in both set design and costume, the music is modern, which gives a set that spans 400 years. In the middle of the Västerbotten summer, we invite you to the most beloved love story in history, filled with laughter, happiness and sadness.

ENG: Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet as summer theater on film. Experience laughter, love, joy and sorrow in a two and a half hour long musical theater performance in a beautiful outdoor setting. In Swedish.

Reviews

Västerbottens Kuriren:
No production could be more appropriate than the Romeo and Juliet we are offered here - a deluxe version of the most generous kind, lustful and generous in the most life-affirming respect... Stage and costume are pure jewelry and small stage events in their own right, glittering, bombastic, maximalist and with a subtle madness ...
...an almost indecent sense of excess one is served the well-choreographed mass scenes: the armed battles where not least Jacob Danielsson and Vilgot Paulsen shine as elegantly cut seconds
Mercutio and Tybalt.
- Count Paris, for example, is a laugh fest in itself, wonderfully overplayed by Marina Gerorgescu... Sonja Lindblom makes here a paradise role as the nurse Johanna and performs the task of local coloring exceptionally elegant, while David Åkerlund makes the tenderest of helpless fathers in his interpretation of Mr. Capulet in charged dynamics with Susanne Sundqvist Bergkvist who puts the diva and matron's
thefull weight of diva and matron in her Mrs. Capulet.
Ana Stålhammar Stanišić makes a Juliet who has both the weight of a grown woman in the world and a girlish rebellious energy, while Romeo in Adam Stanišić Stålhammar's character is modernly multifaceted with a physical acting that convinces as a young man overwhelmed and overwhelming by life itself...
...a performance that is a great victory. Even leaving aside my own exaggerated sentimentality about the greatness of being able to go to the theater again, it is poignant to see a theater house show such strong teamwork. The joy of following a permanent ensemble (and yes, finally, of course, an outstanding Gunnar Eklund must be mentioned here, with a clear own signature as both Mr. Montague and Father Lorenzo), here expanded with the beauty of seeing a larger part of the theater's staff on stage as a consequence of the C-spring. A brilliantly beautiful performance about love in a time when it is needed most - at the same time a tribute to the art of theater itself, the living scenes. " - Sara Meidell, Västerbottenskuriren

Norran
Extra everything, shimmering gold and magnificent song numbers - Västerbottensteaterns "Romeo and Juliet" dares to feel all the big emotions, and it is difficult not to be touched by the chemistry of the couple.
...it's far from lofty verse, it's big, it's bombastic, popular and accessible.
Perhaps that's what captivates most about "Romeo and Juliet" - there's nothing lukewarm, nothing that simmers or is just right.
It is liberating that Västerbottensteaterns Romeo and Juliet are allowed to be in love in a way that feels, a way far away from the chastity of the past and the coldness of today. And that is largely thanks to the main actors. Ana and Adam Stanišić Stålhammar take on Romeo and Juliet with such tenderness and love that it's hard to resist the chemistry. They make two iconic roles their own, where Romeo is allowed to be deep and romantic while Juliet is harder, sharper but just as deeply in love. - Maria Wallin, Norran

Västerbottens Folkblad:
Charged love in a contemporary interpretation. ...a clever take on Shakespeare's classic love drama. Forthis lively modernization creates credibility. Especially in the respectful relationship between Romeo & Juliet it is easy to recognize. Far from the gender conservatism of the time, both Ana Stålhammar Stanišić and Adam Stanišić Stålhammar fight for their love with powerful sharpness. That they evoke an extra palpable, charged radiance between each other on stage may be partly because they are actually married, for real.
Shakespeare wrote about the greatest questions of love, life and death. In Västerbottensteaterns contemporary production, these are given a pulse by a full-fledged ensemble that skillfully asks the timeless question: How can love be wrong? - Yvonne Rittvall, Västerbottens Folkblad
