On a dark and cold winter night in the Polish countryside, a terrible murder takes place.

Janina Duszejko is a retired teacher who has renounced human company. Bored with people and their bickering and conflicts, she has retreated to her small house in the Polish countryside. There she spends her lonely days translating poetry and socializing with the passing wild boars and deer, while the winter snow grows ever higher around the cottage.

Then a strange and terrible murder takes place in the small village next door. The local police are helpless and soon more deaths with bestial overtones follow. Janina decides to take the investigation into her own hands. Only she can save humanity.
