The age of uncertainty

A monologue project from the time of uncertainty in Sweden. Digital premiere June 6.

In a short time, our society has changed fundamentally. A disease we cannot yet control is spreading in ways no one can fully grasp. Crowds are being banned. Workplaces are shutting down. Hospitals fill up. People are isolated. Borders are closing. We are all affected by the novel coronavirus in different ways and the consequences are uncertain. What will happen to our society, to us as individuals, to our culture? We have this uncertainty in common.

In a series of short filmed monologues, voices from nineteen theaters around the country are brought together. It can be a factual report, a utopian fantasy or a dystopian vision of the future. Freely written on the theme of 'the age of uncertainty'. Digital premiere June 6. The project is initiated by Dramaten.

Västerbottensteaterns contribution is called "Spanaren" by and with Julia Jonsson. Produced with the support of Tora von Platen, dramaturge and Bobo Lundén, artistic director.

Spanaren is the name of Västerbottensteatern's contribution to the monologue project The Age of Uncertainty, initiated by Dramaten. In a series of short filmed monologues, voices from nineteen theaters around the country are collected. Spanaren has been written and performed by Julia Jonsson and the entire monologue project has its digital premiere on June 6.

We are all affected by the novel coronavirus in different ways and the consequences are uncertain. What will happen to our society, to us as individuals, to our culture? We have this uncertainty in common. This is the starting point for all nineteen monologues produced in theaters across the country.

Looking at the times we live in with different eyes
Västerbottensteatern's dramaturge Tora von Platen sees the importance of such cultural initiatives in a difficult time.
- "I feel that many people have a great need to reflect and reflect on the experiences of recent months. Culture has an opportunity to take a different approach than, for example, the media, where we can enhance, deepen and bring things to a head. It provides an opportunity to look with different eyes at the times we live in.

How The Peeping Tom was born
Julia Jonsson, with dramaturgical support from Tora von Platen, wrote the script and performs the filmed monologue
Spanaren. Together they reasoned about the importance of digging where you stand when tackling such a broad theme as a sense of general insecurity and asking the question what it can mean for me personally? It ended with Julia recalling an everyday scene she had observed.
- "I got the idea forThe Watcher when I saw a person in town telling people to keep their distance from each other. He was acting as a self-appointed security guard. I started to wonder what would happen if a person who had been in solitary confinement for a long time and was not in his or her right mind started to take the initiative to ensure that the restrictions were respected. That's how the Spotter was born.

The National Stage as a platform for voices from all over the country
Mattias Andersson, director and artistic director of Dramaten, says that as the National Stage it feels right to provide a platform for voices from all over the country.
- Perhaps these short and quickly produced snapshots, from Kiruna in the north to Malmö in the south, can together capture some kind of mood and situation description from a Sweden in quarantine and people in isolation.
