Dreams of public health and a wooden community center – the story of Sigrid Nygren

Sigrid Nygren was born in 1903, the eighth of eight children—seven girls and one boy.
After earning her medical degree in Stockholm, she opened her own medical practice in Skellefteå. She became the first female doctor in private practice in all of Norrland. She also worked as a school doctor and played a major role in the introduction of universal vaccination for schoolchildren.

Sigrid Nygren became a well-known figure in Skellefteå, not least for her active involvement in municipal and county council politics. She was a strong advocate of the view that culture is important for health, and she was deeply committed to both the arts and theater. Sigrid was a prime example of what it means to be a Motvalls!

Author Elisabeth Lindmark shares stories and shows photos of Sigrid Nygren’s unique life’s work, based on her book “Dreams of Public Health and a Wooden Cultural Center.”
