Opening of Gïelevåhkoe/ Giällavahkkuo/ Giellavahkko/ Giellavahkko/ Giellavahkku/ Sami Language Week 2024

The Sami Language Centre together with Skellefteå Municipality and Skellefteå Sami Association organize the opening of the Sami Language Week 2024 at Sara Kulturhus in Syöldate/Skellefteå on 18 October 2024.

What is Sami Language Week?

The purpose of the Sámi Language Week is to raise the status of the Sámi languages, and to increase knowledge of Sámi languages and culture throughout society. The Sámi languages are both indigenous and national minority languages in Sweden, but have very little visibility in mainstream society and are under threat of disappearing. The visibility of languages in everyday life is of great importance for language users' sense of belonging and recognition, as languages are linked to identity and cultural heritage.
