The consequences of war: the 1808-1809 war in Västerbotten

During the Finnish War of 1808-1809, Västerbotten became a front, not only for fighting but also for disease. Red plague and fever affected both soldiers and civilians, and the death statistics of the Swedish Medical Records Office tell of an unprecedented disaster in northern Sweden.
Through preserved medical records, we meet the people behind the numbers, several of whom became role models in Ensign Steel's legends. The lecture tells how the story has been preserved in both figures and poems, and gives an insight into how the war affected the county.
