How Bonnstan was saved

Elisabeth Engberg tells us

Bonnstan, Skellefteå church town, is today one of Skellefteå's main attractions. Church towns and church town culture are a unique phenomenon in northern Sweden and we are happy and proud that one of the largest of the 16 preserved church towns is here with us. It has not always been like this. In the early 1900s, Bonnstan's continued existence was strongly questioned. There were strong voices calling for the demolition of the old houses, considered by many to be a poorly maintained blight on the town. This is the story of how two determined people, Bertil Berthelsson at the National Heritage Board and Ernst Westerlund, then editor of Norra Västerbotten and the National Heritage Board's representative in the northern part of the county, convinced decision-makers and the public that Bonnstan was an invaluable cultural heritage site and got involved in the rescue operation.

A joint event with Skellefteå kyrkstads kammarägarförening. Free admission.
