In 1941, car owner Gust. Jonasson Hammarfält receives an envelope. It is wartime. He is a haulier and his work includes preparing the ice road between Umeå and Finland for the export of goods. But the ice road breaks and trucks go through the ice.
Jörgen Andersson, an archivist at Skellefteå Museum, is sitting with the same envelope many years later. Before he has even looked at what is in the envelope, he starts to find out who this "Gust. Jonasson Hammarfält" might have been. "What was hidden in the envelope" is one of many stories from the Second World War and how it was lived in Västerbotten.
