Freedom, equality and faith

ABOUT A TIME OF STRUGGLE AND COMMUNITY

Sweden at the end of the 19th century. The population was growing and famine was looming. People leave the villages for the growing industrial communities in the hope of a secure livelihood, but encounter misery and exploitation. Dissatisfaction with the miserable living conditions grows and people gather to talk, read and discuss. New ideas emerge - ideas of change and justice.

In Freedom, Equality and Bare Faith, we meet some of the people who were at the forefront of a development that turned Sweden into a democracy. The book tells the story of Isak, a revivalist Christian who reluctantly becomes a strike leader, of Frigga, whose sharp tongue heckles all opponents of women's suffrage, of how Bengt gets sober and discovers the beauty of literature, and of Maja-Lisa - the soul mourner who is hunted by the authorities.

Welcome to Västerbotten a hundred years ago - a time of hardship and deep injustice, but also of solidarity, development and faith in the future. Three of Västerbottensteatern's skilled actors are on stage to bring to life the gallery of colorful personalities from the turn of the century. There will be laughter, tears and new insights in this tribute to those who went before. In addition to storytelling, the show features lots of live music and singing
- both traditional songs and newly written.

The show will be performed in fall 2021 and spring 2022. See more info to the right.
